I’ve been sick
for the past week, so I’ve been spending quite some time watching One Tree
Hill. I used to love that show, and I especially loved watching it with my
sister and sister-in-law. However, I haven’t watched it for a while, but I sure
have rediscovered my love for the series within the past few days. Lucas, the
main character in the series, ends up writing two novels and turns into a
published writer, so it kind of inspired me to put my thoughts into words.
Which can be difficult sometimes, but let’s give it a go.
First of all, it
taught me to follow my dreams. Of course, a show hasn’t been the only factor in
that realization. But still. Several of the characters have dreams: Lucas wants
to be a professional basketball player, but he loses this due to a heart
condition. However, he ends up pursuing his dream of becoming a full-time
writer and is very successful at it, even though he has to overcome writers-block
from time to time. I think we need to see this sometimes: that even though some
people seem to have a perfect life, always get an A, or always get the perfect job;
they probably still have something going on in their life that isn’t perfect.
Somehow, it just seems that they have no challenges. Of course, social media is
a major factor in feeling that everybody’s doing so good. Dangerous even,
perhaps. But in reality many of us are quite the same and face the same challenges
throughout our lifetime. Having challenges doesn’t mean that we cannot
accomplish great things. Maybe they just take a bit longer to achieve. Or maybe
we have to take a different road to achieve them. In the series, Peyton wants
to work at a record label. To sign bands that change people’s lives. However,
she ends up being the assistant of the assistant and working a miserable job. Her
best friend ends up talking her into starting her own record label, which turns
out great. Again, making your own way may be a great solution for some
challenges.
Other important
lessons from the show: it is not always bad to give people second chances. Even
though the person has not been very nice to you. Or shot you uncle (it’s
complicated. Watch the series!). The geeks are not always that bad to befriend,
and the popular kids are not always social or happy. High school does not
define the rest of your life. And Psycho Derek may have his own personal
issues.
This is getting
long. Watch the show. The first 6 seasons are really good, the last 3 OK. But the
characters are all amazing. I think Peyton is the character I really related to
in high school. I really wanted her to end up with Jake, but who she ended up
with is still pretty cool. Brooke is awesome, too.
Have you watched
it? Any favourite quotes or life lessons?
You’re destined for greatness.
