Old Movies

A while ago Mette made a post here about her top 16 favourite movies :) I don't think I'll be able to make a list like that - there are too many great films ;D In stead I have chosen to focus on a particular area namely "old" movies.
I've never really watched older movies before I was introduced to a lot of them at Uni. We've seen everything from silent movies to movies from this decade ;) and I must say that I've learned to appreciate many of the old classics - without them movies wouldn't look like they do today. There are many great movies in the archives, and I want to mention a few that I think people should definitely watch ;)

Lets start with the silent movies. A word that frightens people ;) You should probably not start out by seeing Intolerance from 1916 - a 3 hour long silent movie!! haha ;) Instead I will recommend Fritz Lang's Metropolis from 1927. Okay, this one is also long, but it's incredibly well-made - check out the crazy 1927 style sci-fi - and the story is good.

Man håndmalede simpelthen filmstriberne.

If you don't feel like watching a silent movie for 3 hours you could watch Le Voyage dans la lune from 1902 (A Trip to the Moon). It only lasts around 15 minutes ;) The thing that's so amazing about this film is the fact that it's in colour. The film was hand-painted. Georges Méliès made this short film - maybe you know him from Martin Scorsese's movie Hugo from 2011 where Méliès' life is portrayed. You see his famous studio, how he worked and you actually see him make A Trip to the Moon :)

Well lets move on to the talkies ;) There are so many great black and white movies! You gotta love Hitchcock ;) You have to see his movies ;) I guess everyone knows about the famous shower curtain scene from Psycho (1960), but there is more to this movie.

Then there are the screwball comedies from the 1930s and 40s like It Happened One Night (1934) (to all of you SATC fans - this was the movie Carrie was inspired by when she flashed her leg in the second movie ;D) and His Girl Friday (1940). Good old comedies with lovely outfits and funny games between the male and female main characters ;)

I could keep on listing great movies, there are so many good genres and actors/actresses from back then :D Lets end this post with Gone With the Wind (1939) - fantastic book, fantastic movie - we all need a bit of Clark Gable ;D haha!
